As chick flicks often point out, men are not as sensitive as women, and now a scientific study published in The Daily Mail seems to back up that theory.

But that lack of sensitivity has a knock-on effect – men feel much less guilt than women do, new research suggests.  And the problem is not that women of all ages feel too much guilt, it is rather that guys feel too little.  Women felt more guilt across all three age groups tested and the sensitivity of men – especially those aged between 25 and 33 – was found to be ‘comparatively low’.

Researchers carried out an experiment involving 156 teenagers, 96 young people and 108 adults aged between 40 and 50  They asked them what situations most often caused guilty feelings and also got them to answer a questionnaire about what things made them feel empathetic.

“The difference was particularly stark among people aged between 40 and 50. The data also suggest that female teenagers and young women have higher scores than males of the same age,” said lead author Dr Itziar Etxebarria of the University of the Basque Country in Spain.

“This is caused by certain educational practices, which demand more of females.”

The most common forms of guilt were related to situations where people caused harm to others.

On Sunday the Times published a story that has been creating a stir ever since.  It seems that according to a team of British scientists that the G-spot doesn’t exist.  After studying 1,800 British women scientists have found that the G-spot is simply  a subjective idea that has been encouraged by therapists and magazines.  This would seem to be good news as the often elusive G-spot seems to be  have been given to some women and denied to others and now may not even exist at all.

The scientists studied pairs of identical and non identical twins.  The identical twins share 100% of their genes and the non identical twins share 50% of their genes.  The thought was that if an identical twin said that she had a G-spot then it would be likely that her twin sister would also have one.  No patterns emerged at all.  Identical twins were no more likely to share a G-spot than non identical twins making the claim a matter of subjective opinion.

Most conventional doctors have always doubted that G-spots exist. “I think this study proves the difference between popular science and biological or anatomical science,” said Gedis Grudzinskas, consultant gynaecologist at London Bridge hospital.

In a new study performed to find out why girls and women shy away from computer science, it turns out that the environment of the classroom has a lot to do with attracting females to the courses.  People don’t like stereotypes, but in this case, the image of the classic computer nerd who stays up all night coding may actually be keeping women away from the field.  Science Daily reports on the study that was carried out by the psychology department at the University of Washington:

“When people think of computer science the image that immediately pops into many of their minds is of the computer geek surrounded by such things as computer games, science fiction memorabilia and junk food,” said Sapna Cheryan, a University of Washington assistant professor of psychology and the study’s lead author. “That stereotype doesn’t appeal to many women who don’t like the portrait of masculinity that it evokes.”

In the study, students entered a small classroom that either contained objects stereotypically associated with computer science such as Star Trek posters, video game boxes and Coke cans, or non-stereotypical items such as nature posters, art, a dictionary and coffee mugs. The students were told to ignore these objects because the room was being shared with another class. After spending several moments in the classroom, the students filled out questionnaires that asked about their attitude toward computer science.

Women exposed to the stereotypical setup expressed less interest in computer science than those who saw the non-stereotypical objects. Men placed in the same situations did not show a similar drop in interest in computer science. Cheryan said this study suggests that a student’s choice of classes or a major can be influenced by the appearance of classrooms, halls and offices.

“These studies suggest objects such as science fiction books and Star Trek posters communicate whether or not a person belongs in an environment. “Instead of trying to change the women who do not relate to the stereotype, our research suggests that changing the image of computer science so that more women feel they fit in the field will go a long way to recruiting them into computer science,” said Cheryan.

While trying to make compounds with novel electronic properties, chemists from Oregon State University accidentally came across a whole new pigment of blue.  Why is this such a big deal?

The New York Times reports that blue pigments of the past have often been expensive (ultramarine blue was made from the gemstone lapis lazuli, ground up), poisonous (cobalt blue is a possible carcinogen and Prussian blue, another well-known pigment, can leach cyanide) or apt to fade (many of the organic ones fall apart when exposed to acid or heat).

The new pigment is durable and brilliantly blue.  Look for awesome new products to come in a rad new shade of blue soon.

Do you find happy shinny people annoying?  Do you go around all day with your frown not upside down?  Do you think the glass is half empty?  This probably won’t make you happy, but a story from the BBC says that all of this might actually be good for you.

According to an Australian psychology expert’s research findings, being grumpy may be helping you to think more clearly.  People who have a negative outlook are less gullible, better decision makers, and pay closer attention to detail.  Professor Joe Forgas told Australian Science Magazine that people in bad moods cope better with demanding situations than happy people.

Professor Forgas said:

‘ “Whereas positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, co-operation and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking, paying greater attention to the external world.” ‘

In earlier research Forgas also found that cloudy, dreary weather improved memory and bright sunny days promoted forgetfulness.

Both the Telegraph and BBC ran stories today about a study that was published in the European Journal of Operational Research suggesting that women should be at least five years younger than the men they marry and have more education.  It also recommends that neither partner should have been divorced in the past.

The study tracked 1,000 couples for five years and looked for patterns.  The report did say that people pick partners based on, “on the basis of love, physical attraction, similarity of taste, beliefs and attitudes, and shared values”.  But it added that using “objective factors” such as age, education and cultural origin “may help reduce divorce”.

Interestingly, both the Telegraph and BBC used Beyonce and Jay-Z as a couple that will stand the test of time.  This is because she is 11 years younger than him and he never graduated high-school while she did.

My main problem with how the Telegraph and BBC covered the story is how they framed the study for their readers.  The Telegraph’s headline was, “Men should marry young, smart women, say scientists” and the BBC’s was, “ ‘Younger Wife’ for Marital Bliss”.  This not only takes the position that readers of both of these publications are male, but that men better take note at this important new research.  I can only imagine the headlines if the research told women to marry younger men, possibly, “Look Out For Cougar Attacks As Women Need Young Husbands”.

Unfortunately for you gay couples out there the study doesn’t give any insight into who you should be partnering with.

Despite the fashion industry constantly showing us images of impossibly tall & thin models we are not immune from the forces of natural selection.

A new study sponsored by the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, NC set out to find out if natural selection is still at work in humans today. It turns out that we are still evolving.

The conclusion of the study? By 2409 women on average will be almost an inch shorter and 2 pounds heavier. On the bright side the women of the future will also have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, will have their first child at a younger age and reach menopause later in life.

A new book titled “Manthropology: The Science of the Inadequate Modern Male” written by Australian anthropologist Peter McAllister will soon be hitting the shelves at your local book store.

If you chose to buy it you will be hit by this phrase in the in opening prologue:

Reuters reports in a recent article McAllister believes that many prehistoric Australian aboriginals could outrun world 100 and 200 meters record holder Usain Bolt in modern conditions.

One of the more amusing points in the book is that a Neanderthal woman had 10 percent more bulk than a modern European man.  Trained to capacity she would have reached 90 percent of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s bulk at his peak in the 1970′s.  Yet is doesn’t stop there.  It turns out that any Neanderthal woman could beat the current California governor in an arm wrestle.

‘But because of the quirk of her physiology, with a much shorter lower arm, she would slam him to the table without a problem.’

But would Neanderthal woman be able to beat Schwarzenegger in an election?

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting the results of a new study that sites prenatal exposure to a chemical called BPA (found in plastic water bottles) can lead to aggression in girls.  The article also said that no significant effect was found in boys.

As an aggressive female myself I have to wonder if the reason and effect was found in girls and not boys is because aggression is acceptable and expected in boys and not in girls.

I think that the pro-woman blog Jezebel sums it up the best here:

‘ A chemical found in bottled water apparently increases “aggression” in young girls. Pretty soon they’ll be playing sports, demanding raises, and speaking their minds. Better give them booze instead. ‘

Why don’t pregnant women tip over? It’s a good question.

Professor Katherine Whitcome of the University of Cincinnati took home an Ig Nobel Prize on Thursday night for analytically determining why they don’t.

It turns out women have an extra wedge-shaped vertebrae in their lower back. Women have thee vertebrae compared with only two in men and can flex their spine more easily.  This is an evolutionary adaptation that is unique to women.
