Picture of Conan O'Brien & Me

I had the pleasure of being at an event that Conan O’Brien was hosting last night and getting my picture taken with him (in case you are wondering, his is very nice, he acts exactly like you would expect him to from watching him on TV).  I posted the photo on Facebook and Twitter, like I am known to do with various picture of myself from various different events.  Today one of my friends made a funny “mock” photo of himself with Conan using my photo as the base and putting his head over my head.

When the picture of Conan O’Brien and me hit the internet I was of course immediately hit with the customary type of compliments you would expect, such as, “Jealous!” and, “Cool!”  The picture was even featured on today’s LOL/OMG blog, all great things.

The thing is, when Karl posts his picture of Conan, me & his head on the internet, people start to compliment him on his rack.  I start to wonder, why didn’t I get any compliments on my rack?  I mean, it’s the same rack?  And really Karl isn’t getting complimented on his rack, he is actually getting complimented on my rack.  So on behalf of all you peeps who complimented Karl today on “his” rack, thank you.

In the end during a heated Facebook discussion we were able to figure it out.  As it turns out, cleavage stands out more on a man than on a woman.  Also, telling a man he has a nice rack isn’t sexual harassment but telling a woman she has one is, even if the rack being complimented on the man is a woman’s. Most importantly, it turns out that I am prettier than Karl.  When people look at a picture of me they have more to look at than just my rack, such as my face.  When people look at a picture of Karl and my rack is involved it turns out that my rack steels the show.  Sorry about that Karl, sometimes the world is just a cold, hard place.

It’s the time of year when Valentines is close and love is in the air.  People are talking about romance and many Twin Cities publications are making lists of sexy things to do, even lists of the Sexiest Twin Citians. The problem is, here in Minnesota, we are not particularly very sexy up in here.  We are really not sexy this time of year in the throws of winter with snow up to our eyeballs and bad fashion choices all around.  Our population is known for being passive aggressive, hard to get to know, and likewise really hard to date.  There is a reason we ended up as #46 on the Best & Worst Cities to Find Love list with a “D” for singles and an “F” for marriage.  So, instead of doing a Valentines list about how “sexy” we are and what the “sexy things” are to do around town are, I thought I would give you a Twin Cities Not-So-Sexy-List.

Thank you to everyone who sent me messages on Facebook and Twitter about horrible dating experiences in the Twin Cities.  I have used pieces of these messages to compile this list of what makes single life in the Twin Cities Not-So-Sexy.

The Hipster Dude With The Dirty Apartment

There were a lot of women who seemed to have an experience like this.  What at first seems likes an exciting and good looking guy turns into a nightmare once you get taken back to his place.

Here is how it started:

“At the time, everything was sort of sexy about this extremely sketchy individual. Upon showing a picture to a friend, her reply of ” I think he needs to take a shower.”, should have been my first warning. My reply, “but this is what they call ‘hipster’, and he’s great in bed”.

Here is what happened when she saw his apartment:

“After stepping over two pizza boxes in the foyer to use the bathroom, I couldn’t tell if there was a black rug on the floor or if it was hair. After I saw the horrid state of the sink, I knew that every white surface was covered in a thick covering of dude hair. Oh, then I asked for a glass of water, and despite 40 non-matching coffee mugs of the promo give-away variety stacked in the sink, I learned that non of them were clean and he had run out of dish soap. So yep, I had to bend over an sip outta facet. OHHHH, then in his room, his entire bedside table was covered in remnants of a bout with the flu – various over-the-counter cold remedies, crusted OJ in a glass, a thermometer, aspirator, & balled up used snag rags strewn all over the floor.”

Yeah, that’s not so sexy.  Sometimes when you think you win you really lose.

The Chick Who Dated A Guy For T-Wolves Tickets

Guys, have you ever dated a lady that seemed like she just wasn’t that into you?  Yet every time you brought up the season tickets you had to the Timberwolves she was really hot for your package all over again?  Well, maybe she was just using you for the seats.  This one came to me from another friend.  It goes something like this:

“Not so sexy: a friend of mine kept dating a guy she didn’t like just for the perks – T-Wolves tickets, dinners paid, etc. She finally broke off when we all chided her for trampling all over this guy for a free ride.”

I think Kanye describes this situation best in his song “Gold Digger“.

Picnics In The Park Gone Wrong

It seems like such a romantic idea.  Plus in Minnesota when the weather is nice we really like to take advantage of it and get outside.  Somehow we still mange to make a mess of the simple picnic date here in the Twin Cities.

I love how my friend actually outed herself with this lovely story:

“I once went on a picnic with some guy as a first date. It was at a location 2.5 hours away. I packed the food. There were dried apricots that I couldn’t stop eating. Yeah, they tore up my colon pretty bad. We had to drive back with the windows down and stop for bathroom breaks a few times. I almost shit my pants. The only thing that would have made that day worse is if I actually had.”

This is actually not sexy at all.

And here is another story that should have been romantic but is just awful instead:

“Took an aide to Mayor Al Hofstede to see the 4th of July fireworks at Powderhorn Park, ca. 1974. She fell asleep on the grass.”

Yeah, she fell asleep.  With the fireworks and everything.  Not so sexy.

Sooooooo Drunk That It Just Gets Gross

Have you ever gone out with someone only to get on the date and watch them transform into a drunk monster?  Have you ever been dating someone for a while and then one night get blindsided by super drunkpants out of the blue?  Really, this can happen to anyone.  And yes, it happens in the Twin Cities.

This poor guy is a drunk chick magnet:

“1st date w/girl. She puked red wine in a bar, carried her to cab, puked in cab, puked on herself and my floor. Diff. date, also a 1st date: went golfing. Drunk when I picked her up, she drove cart into sand trap.”

Can you get a DWI while driving on a golf course?

This story about what happens to a girl while sleeping over at the place of the hipster dude she is dating is as epic as it is horrifying.  I mean really, holy crap:

“I’m asleep. I’m awake! I’m freezing……..I’m shivering……. there is no top sheet…… where is it?…….I’m really shivering, let me grab the crusty comforter…..wait…… it is….. WET!…… I’m wet………lift up comforter…..I am laying in a river of piss only a 24 pack of PBR could have created. Review my options. There is no other piece of furniture that I could transfer myself to, as there is no furniture and it’s 10 below outside. If I leave for my car, I will be a urine popsicle.

Nudge hipster dude. He is clearly horrified. Thank god. He strangely instructs me to “stand back”. Praise Jesus….new linens, maybe even a mattress pad, or a secret room with a king size serta with 1000 thread count egyptian cotton. I am naked at this point, my nipples could cut fine gems. In tarzan fashion, hipster picks up mattress over his head, throws it down to land on it’s other side, (which you and I all know has to be infested with last night’s piss). Hops into bed and motions me to join him, on this “new side”….. no sheets, no blankets, nothing.”

What is the guy supposed to do next time? Wear a pull-up?  Really, that is not so sexy.

Guys Wearing Footie Pajamas To The Bar

In case you don’t believe me I am telling you right now, this really happened.  It really did.  I was at the Lyndale Tap House with my gang watching the Vikings / Saints game a few weeks ago.  I got up from the table.  The place was packed.  Some guys came into the bar.  They were wearing footie pajamas and robes.  One of them sat down in my seat while I was gone.  It went down something like this:

My friend (to guy in Footie PJ Guy): Someone is sitting there, you probably don’t want to sit there.

FPJG (Footie PJ Guy): That’s ok, I’ll move when they get back.

My friend: I don’t think you understand, you really don’t want to be sitting there when this person gets back, it’s just not a good idea.

FPJG: I think I can handle it.

My friend: I don’t think you can, but what ever.

(time passes, I come back, I see FPJG, I can’t freakin’ believe these guys, can’t believe one of them is in my seat.)

Me: What the hell are you wearing?

FPJG: Pajamas.

Me: What kind of pajamas?

FPJG: Footie pajamas.

Me: Why in the world a grown man ever where footie pajamas, let alone leave the house in them, let alone show up to a bar to watch football in them? What the hell is wrong with you? I mean really? And then you sit in my seat?

My friend: Judy, ok, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, that’s probably enough, can he go?

Me: Yeah, ok, as long as we don’t have to look at that anymore.

Boringpants Day Mascot: dude who fell asleep at Dunn Brothers

Today might be one of the most tedious days ever in Minneapolis.  We have had a lot of snow this year.  What I mean by that is that we have had a ton of snow.  Then to top it off we are getting even more snow.  Today.  So much that Minneapolis declared it a Snow Emergency.  We really don’t need this right now world.  The thing that makes this even more tedious is that places in the of the country that usually don’t get snow got some snow, such as Washington D.C., and they are all excited about it.  And now they are all over the news like, “Look at us, we have a ton of freaking snow up in here! We can throw snowballs!  The White House has snow in front of it!”  Really?  The last thing I want to do is turn on my TV and see pictures of more snow when all I do is see piles of it outside.  Stop it stupid southern states!  It’s SNOW.  We don’t care.

Now you may ask me, how boring can today really be?  Well, it is so boring that I decided to get out of my office for a few hours and try to work at the Dunn Brothers near me on Loring Park.  I am there for about ten minutes and a dude in a chair near me totally falls asleep and starts to snore.  Loudly.  I decide to start Twittering about him and about how it is boringpants day.  Someone tells me that the sleeping guy is the mascot of boringpants day.  I agree.  Dude who snores in the Loring Park Dunn Brothers is totally the mascot of boringpants day.  For sure.

You may also ask what is the big deal with being bored?  You may say so what if people in Minneapolis are bored for a while and it’s all snowy up all in there, the weather will change soon enough.  Well, I came across this article, “Beware: being bored to death can kill“.  Yes people, we are in serious danger up in here.  It turns out that the people from the Boredom Institute of New Jersey find that boredom is an international disease.  The problem?  People tend to find the most self-destructive and stupid ways to deal with it.  I hear that.  I believe we can look for a rise in crazypants behavior as boringpants day continues in Minneapolis.  The irony here is that even though it is a Snow Emergency in Minneapolis the real emergency may actually be boringpants day.  Boredom kills people.  Boredom kills.

JudyJudyJudy Last Year at Glitter Ball 2

One of my favorite events of the year is Glitter Ball.  It’s not just because I get to glam up in awesome retro fashion (see picture of me above from last year).  It’s not just because some of the best bands from the Twin Cities and a great headliner come together and play classic guilty pleasure songs that rock so hard it can’t be denied. This year an impressive lineup of local artists including Alison Scott, White Light Riot, The Melismatics, The Notties and more will take stage to resurrect classics from such notables as AC/DC, Spinal Tap and Michael Jackson. And while free ‘big hair’ makeovers and throwback drink prices will be available, the whole evening goes beyond paying tribute to a bygone era.

At the heart of Glitter Ball 3 is a goal to raise awareness for one singular cause: youth mentoring in the Twin Cities, and this is the real reason it is one of my favorite events of the year. The event is being put on by Rock the Cause, an innovative non-profit that aims to empower people though music, community and awareness. The mission of Rock the Cause is to partner with other no-profits to create the next generation of giving through the power of rock-n-roll music. Glitter Ball 3 is the first of three concerts Rock the Cause will hold in conjunction with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities. It’s an ideal match for BBBS as an agency that is always seeking to engage new volunteers and donors who are willing to make the safe, healthy development of neighborhood young people a top priority.

“We are thrilled to partner with Rock the Cause so we may share the mentoring movement with Twin Cities’ music fans,” comments Gloria C. While that number means life-changing friendships for so many children, there is still a waiting list of more than 690 boys and girls throughout the metro area who want or need a mentor – just one reason why Rock the Cause has come alongside Big Brothers Big Sisters in helping address those needs.

Their efforts with Big Brothers Big Sisters even prompted Mayor R.T. Ryback to proclaim January 29, 2010, Rock the Cause for Big Brothers Big Sisters Day in the City of Minneapolis. With two more shows on the horizon  – one on the campus of St. Olaf College on February 27, and the second at Grand Old Day in St. Paul — the movement to mobilize music fans to become fans, volunteers and supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters is underway.

Lynn Torgerson is running for Congress in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District against Representative Keith Ellison (D).  I live in the 5th District of Minnesota, own a home in Minneapolis, and am proud to call Keith my Congressman.  Lynn Torgerson also lives in the 5th District of Minnesota, owns a home in Minneapolis, but she is not proud to call Keith her Congressman.  In fact, she has a huge problem with Representative Ellison.  Her problem with Keith Ellison, as she states on her campaign website is:

“Keith Ellison is a Muslim, a person who was raised Christian and converted to Islam. … Now, with all due respect, America, and its people, should be lauded for its goal of promoting to public office and other high ranks, people of color, women, minorities, etc. However, quite frankly, in our zeal, we simply went too far with Keith Ellison. Keith Ellison simply is not a proper person to have in our federal government.”

In “The Issues” section of her webpage Torgerson has a long, rambling section titled “Freedom of Speech/Freedom of Religion” where she asks the question “What do I know of Islam?”  Things she sites as examples of her expert knowledge on the subject of Islam are:

• her observations of Muslim women in downtown Minneapolis
• having heard that 911 happened
• reading the book Infidel
• being a Christian and not wanting to kill people
• knowledge of the Ft. Hood killings
• having an Egyptian friend

How any of these things make you an expert on Islam I do not know.  How any of these things make you qualified to be in the United States Congress I really don’t know.  Why someone would decide to run for office and then devote most of their campaign website to bigoted rantings is beyond me.  I’m hear to tell you Lynne Torgerson, you are not getting my vote.

Last night El Vez played his !VIVA CHRISTMAS! show at First Avenue.  I was there with about 100 other friends and acquaintances in the VIP section.  The show was great with tons of classic Christmas songs mashed up with classic rock anthems.  Here is a video clip of El Vez doing his version of “Little Drummer Boy”.

The event was also my friend Alex Levin’s Birthday Party.  I had been in email contact with El Vez for a few weeks leading up to last night’s event.  I got to go backstage and meet El Vez which was a super big treat so we could figure out the details of our surprise for Alex.  I have to say that El Vez and the people who work for him were fantastic and it was great to meet them.

The picture above is of my friend Alex at the event, please note that he is wearing an Elvis wig and glasses in honor of the El Vez show.  The surprise we had planned was for El Vez to call Alex up on stage and sing Happy Birthday to him and give him a Pimp Cup.  Here is how it went down:

My good friend Alex Levin is having a massive birthday party tomorrow. Alex owns a web design and development company called ThermoDynamo and also runs a concert promotion site called Syd’s List. For his birthday a huge group of us are all going to !VIVA CHRISTMAS! with El Vez and Los Straitjackets at First Avenue tomorrow night.  For those of you who don’t know who El Vez is, he is the Mexican Elvis, and shame on you for not know that.

Somewhere along the line an employee of Alex’s had the idea of contacting El Vez and letting him know that a group of us would be at the concert in the VIP section celebrating a birthday. This of course led to El Vez and I emailing each other regularly over the past few weeks to come up with ideas of how to make the show and the night extra special. The end result of the emailing was El Vez asking me if he could send me a song with lyrics so I can try and get around 100 people in the crowd to shout certain lines along with him. Here is the email that El Vez sent me:

On Monday Sara Palin’s Going Rogue book tour brought her to the Twin Cities and to the Mall of America.  As promised I went to the event and talked to the people who were there.  I found out a few interesting things; Sarah Palin was clearly wearing a Bumpit in her hair, security guards at the Mall of America like you to “keep it moving”, and dudes totally love Sarah Palin.  Everywhere I looked, everywhere I turned, everywhere I stood, I kept seeing the most unlikely of Sarah Palin fans: the everyday dude.

The gentleman pictured about was one of the first people I spoke to.  He had just finished talking to Palin and was still “buzzed” from the experience.  I asked him where he came from, if he was a Republican, and why he liked Sarah Palin so much.  This is pretty much what he told me:

“I just live in Richfield so it was only a three mile drive for me.  I just seemed like such a great chance to meet her (Palin).  I’m not a Republican, I’m not a Democrat either.  I vote for both parties in every election.  I go with the candidates I like.  I really like Sarah Palin because of how she handles herself and all the things she does.  I just think she is really cool.”

After that exchange I decided to take photographs of the men who I was noticing at the event, because like the man I talked to, the dudes who showed up to meet Palin didn’t fit into any neat demographic.  There were leather jacket wearing urban type dudes.

Dudes who looked like they probably took the day off of work from their office jobs to come to the event …

and just plain dude type dudes.

Who knew that dudes loved Sarah Palin so much.  Not me.

Dusty is a political consultant well known for his social and new media skills, specializing in graphic design, video production and viral marketing.  Having worked on 9 campaigns, most recently on Sen. Al Franken’s 2008 campaign, he has been a trusted name in Midwest politics for the last 14 years.

The amazing story with Dusty this year, and the reason he is number one on this list, is that he just started blogging in March of 2009. The other really outstanding thing about Dusty is that he is completely independent and self funded.  Dusty started a political gossip blog, dustytrice.com,  that was frequently featured on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, The Ed Schultz Show, FOX and Friends, The Washington Post, Gawker, Boing Boing, TPM, Politico, Wonkette, City Pages and numerous other national outlets.  The blog was one of the top read political blogs in Minnesota, spawned several viral youtube hits with over half a million views and was banned in China.  Yes, it was banned in China, believe it.

Unfortunately, Dusty recently quit blogging to focus on taking new clients and projects outside the political realm.  Dusty’s story truly is the “Twin Cities Social Media Story of 2009”.  Watch Dusty’s now famous video of Al Franken talking down an angry mob.

2.  BLOIS OLSON & DAVID ERICKSON:  PR-MAGEDDON

David and Blois are two leaders at Tunheim of what is emerging as the most innovative social media team at a larger agency in the Twin Cities.  The two first teamed up in 1998 to launch the first email newsletter on Minnesota politics with MN-Politics.com.

An example of how Blois and David use social media to help clients is what they did for Punch Pizza.  Blois and David used social media and online strategies to make up for a reduction in Punch Pizza’s paid marketing efforts.  One was Snowmagedon, when they generated a Twitter offer to their followers when a blizzard was about to hit the Twin Cities.  The offer, allowed Punch to be profitable on a night they would have otherwise not been due to built in labor and food costs.

Another great campaign was the Bacon Chocolate Conan O’Brien Head. Conan O’Brien declared he would bring his show to the Minnesota State Fair if he could get his weight in some delicious chocolate-covered bacon. Unfortunately, he had to remain in Los Angeles, so a likeness was commissioned in his spirit by No Name Premium Meats (including bacon!) and seafood. Using white chocolate for his complexion and bacon to capture his wavy hair, the bust was delivered to his studio on Tuesday, August 25.  The bacon-chocolate likeness made it on the air, and it was really funny too.

3.  KELLY GROEHLER:  MAY THE TWELPFORCE BE WITH YOU

Kelly works for Best Buy Co., Inc., a key player in one of the most fascinating and rapidly-changing industry sectors: consumer electronics and technology. She initially joined Best Buy to help build a reputation management framework, so the company could better understand stakeholder perceptions at a time of massive business growth, expansion, and transformation.

Today, her team helps guide the actions and words of Best Buy in ways that tell their story of continued, sustainable growth and differentiation as the technology sector evolves. She also leads an initiative to overhaul the role of public relations within the company: Through use of consumer technology, including social media, they can create, aggregate, and distribute news and information that keeps pace with the rapidly-changing global media landscape – and actively engages our employees, consumers, journalists, communities and stakeholders worldwide. Kelly is one of the people at Best Buy that helped to shape the corporate social media guidelines for employees and started the innovative Twelpforce at Best Buy.  Twelpforce is a way for employees of Best Buy to share and stream Twitter feeds so a big company can communicate and connect with each other as well as with customers.

4.  JASON MATHESON & ALEXIS THOMPSON: STAR CATCHERS

Jason Matheson was just a simple boy with a dream.  That dream was to get in touch with Katie Couric.  This is where his co-host on the popular FM107.1 radio show Jason & Alexis, Alexis Thompson, and social media come in and make this dream come true.

A Facebook group was started named “Katie Couric please call Jason Matheson and give him a CBS hat and mug.”  Within a short period of time the group had over 200 members (including me, I am a contributor to the Jason & Alexis show) and the group had also launched a grassroots Twitter campaign of people contacting Katie to call into Jason’s show.  After a few months, Katie Couric did contact Jason via Twitter, letting him know that both she and her staff were aware of the Facebook group and thought it was a hoot.  Since that initial contact Couric has been on the Jason & Alexis show, recorded promo’s for the show, and been in contact via Twitter frequently.  I would say that this is truly a social media dream come true.

5. JENNIFER KANE:  SOCIAL MEDIA MENTOR

Jennifer Kane is principal of Kane Consulting, a social media marketing and PR firm that specializes in research, strategy and measurement/monitoring, in addition to producing events and providing training in these areas.  She is an award-winning strategic planner with more than 15 years of experience in marketing, and is a sought after speaker, writer and facilitator. She also tweets an awful lot.

Jennifer is a member of the Editorial Board for Minnesota Meetings and Events Magazine (for whom she writes columns about social media), is on the Ambassador Council for Author Teleseminars, and in 2009 was named one of the Top 20 Social Media Innovators in the Twin Cities.

In 2009 she developed and produced “Kane Camps,” a series of day-long seminars and evening classes designed to introduce small businesses to social media, which attracted more than 200 participants.  These camps have been so successful, and Jennifer so popular, that she received more nominations for this award than any other person, mainly from past camp attendees.  To become one of Jennifer’s “followers” click here.
