Last night El Vez played his !VIVA CHRISTMAS! show at First Avenue.  I was there with about 100 other friends and acquaintances in the VIP section.  The show was great with tons of classic Christmas songs mashed up with classic rock anthems.  Here is a video clip of El Vez doing his version of “Little Drummer Boy”.

The event was also my friend Alex Levin’s Birthday Party.  I had been in email contact with El Vez for a few weeks leading up to last night’s event.  I got to go backstage and meet El Vez which was a super big treat so we could figure out the details of our surprise for Alex.  I have to say that El Vez and the people who work for him were fantastic and it was great to meet them.

The picture above is of my friend Alex at the event, please note that he is wearing an Elvis wig and glasses in honor of the El Vez show.  The surprise we had planned was for El Vez to call Alex up on stage and sing Happy Birthday to him and give him a Pimp Cup.  Here is how it went down:

My good friend Alex Levin is having a massive birthday party tomorrow. Alex owns a web design and development company called ThermoDynamo and also runs a concert promotion site called Syd’s List. For his birthday a huge group of us are all going to !VIVA CHRISTMAS! with El Vez and Los Straitjackets at First Avenue tomorrow night.  For those of you who don’t know who El Vez is, he is the Mexican Elvis, and shame on you for not know that.

Somewhere along the line an employee of Alex’s had the idea of contacting El Vez and letting him know that a group of us would be at the concert in the VIP section celebrating a birthday. This of course led to El Vez and I emailing each other regularly over the past few weeks to come up with ideas of how to make the show and the night extra special. The end result of the emailing was El Vez asking me if he could send me a song with lyrics so I can try and get around 100 people in the crowd to shout certain lines along with him. Here is the email that El Vez sent me:
