Reading the “Fashion & Style” section of the New York Times online I came across one of the most insane trends I have heard of in a long time.  Apparently a very small group of crazypants dudes, and one young lady, in New York City have decided that the best way to stay in shape is to eat and exercise like caveman.  The article mainly focuses on a “Mr. Durant” who works in online advertising and keeps a meat locker in the living room of his apartment for his “organ meat” and “deer ribs”.  Yes, he and his friends are part of a subculture that returns them to the habits of our Paleolithic ancestors.  But they just like to call themselves cavemen.  And I was spending all this time thinking that hipsters were crazy.

The article goes on and on about all the bat-shit crazy stuff that cavemen are into so I will just sum it up for you here:

• The caveman lifestyle involves eating large quantities of meat and then fasting between meals to approximate times our ancestors faced between hunts.
• Vegetables and fruits are fine, but cavemen avoid foods like bread that were unavailble before the invention of agriculture.
• Cavemen believe the human body evolved for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, and their goal is to wean themselves off modern day bad habits.
• Exercise routines are focused on sprinting and jumping, to replicate how a prehistoric person might have fled from a mastodon.  Some even scoot around the underbrush on all fours, leap between boulders, play catch with stones, and other activities they believe early man excelled.
• Cavemen donate blood frequently with the idea being that various hardships might have occasionally left ancient humans a pint short.
• They see vegans as a misguided, rival tribe.
• They are computer-savvy cavemen men and are not interested in living off the grid.  Eating and exercise habits aside, the cavemen say they have no nostalgia for the prehistoric world.
