There is a man on Tumblr who has been actively blogging for six months now but he doesn’t know that he is doing it or what a Tumblr blog even is.  His name is Johnathan Wolcott and he was born in New Haven Connecticut on March 17th, 1933.

It seems that Johnathan’s grandson set up the Tumblr blog for him and then left.  Since then Johnathan has been interacting with the public but he doesn’t know who the people are or how they came to be on his computer.

Yesterday I received an email from my dad.  It was one sentence long, as most of the emails from my dad are.  This is what it said:

I have just published this article on my blog.

After thinking “Whaaaa? My dad has a blog?” I clicked on the link.  Imagine my surprise at seeing such interesting posts as, “Runaway Toyotas: The Real Issues Behind the Scandal.”  History buffs will love, “Red River of the North: – A history of flooding and possible mitigation.“  Who wouldn’t be on the edge of their seat while reading, “iBiquity/IBOC HD (Hybrid digital) radio system. An evaluation performed using the Sony XDR-F1 HD FM/AM Digital Tuner.“  And of course, we are all dying to know more about, “Dons problem.“

Here is some of what my dad wrote in the “Dons problem” posting:

“Don (Moron) posted on the Audioholics forum about adding a sub woofer to his speakers.

His speaker system was a reflex loaded MTM system, using dual Focal 7W4411 woofers and Focal axiom TLR tweeter in MTM configuration.  Don had built the speakers which had been professionally designed and the crossovers supplied by the designer.”

I agree. Don is a total moron.

I wasn’t even so much surprised that my dad has a blog as I was at the fact that he has been blogging since 2007.  Yes, since 2007!!!! How can this have been going on so long without me knowing about it?  And he blogged about Obama’s speech on race, with video! In a positive way! And he is a republican!

Next I’m going to find out he has a Twitter account with 15,000 followers.  I know it.

There are twice as many men currently blogging as women.  Back in 2006 studies showed that 56% of the bloggers were women but a recent Technorati report titled “Who Are The Bloggers” lists that two thirds of the bloggers are male.  Where are all the ladies at?

A recent post on Jezebel talks about this issue and notes some recent articles and blogs on the topic. Dr. Melissa Clouthier is mentioned who wrote a post on her blog titled, “Why There Are Fewer Women Bloggers“.  Clouthier takes the stance that women are too nice to blog and don’t want to stand up to all the comments one has to read associated with being opinionated. She writes this of the typical female blogger:

‘When it comes the arena of ideas, the women who blog are not typical women. Over and over, the women who blog are tougher. Like the shotgun wielding Western expansionists of yore, women bloggers take shots and can shoot back. ‘

I would like to agree with this statement about myself as a blogger.  The thing is, I know a lot of women who don’t blog who also fit this description so I am not sure if that is the reason that women are choosing not to blog.

In the Mother Jones article, “Where Are All The Lady Bloggers?” it is pointed out the deficit of female bloggers is greater than that in newsrooms (women represent only 31% of American newspaper staffers).  After writing about a glass ceiling in the blogosphere they come to a strange conclusion that women don’t like to blog because they are worried about online safety.  I would argue if that was the case, wouldn’t these same women be staying off of the social network sites that they are flocking to in mass numbers?

One of the reasons that I decided to start blogging is because I noticed the blogosphere was becoming such a boys club and I thought it was important to give a female perspective.  I have always been attracted to doing things that are non-traditional for women.  I am an architect by profession and have won awards such as the “Woman Pioneer Award” from the National Association of Business Owners for being in a woman in non-traditional field.  I have never thought about the negative feedback my opinions might bring, or about online safety.  I do think about being a female voice that balances out all the male bloggers constantly blaring on the web.

Why do I think more women aren’t blogging?  Partly because of the same reason that more women don’t enter math and science related fields at the same rate as men.  I think because blogging is associated with technology, and many young girls are not encouraged to go into tech related fields, women are more likely to be intimidated by technology.  I also think that blogging isn’t high on the priority list for women.  With work, kids, friends, and other responsibilities it is difficult to make a commitment to blogging regularly.  It is a mistake not to though.  Men are getting a lot of attention and in some cases even money for blogging.  If women continue to let men lead in this area we will be left behind on another important area in new media.
