This summer at the lake house my dad built and deployed a Loon Maternity Unit. He did this because the Loon population is in decline in Minnesota, mainly due to problems with being able to nest safely and keep chicks safe once they are hatched.  My parents noticed a pair of mating Loons on the water in front of their property. They also noticed the past few years none of their chicks have survived.  After doing some research on how to solve the problem my dad decided that building a Loon raft and deploying it a few feet from the shore would be the best way to get the chicks to survive.

This year the mating Loons at the lake house had two chicks.  One didn’t make it, but the other one is doing well and getting rather large as you can see from the photo I took yesterday.  The next hurdle this chick has to make is surviving a flight to Florida this winter where it will stay for the next two years until fully into adulthood.  At that time the Loon will fly back to our lake and come to the same spot where it was born to mate.

Normally the time in Florida wouldn’t be such a challenge to the Loon’s survival, but as we all know, the BP oil spill has changed things drastically.  We won’t know the impact of the oil spill on Minnesota Loons until two years from now when we see if they come back home or not.  Until then, we will keep deploying Loon rafts so we can do our part to keep the chicks safe while they are still close to home.

Today the United Way kicked off their Dream Team campaign, aimed at raising money for local charities in the Twin Cities.  The “Dream Teams” pair a local news personality with a local corporation. Each Dream Team aligns with a United Way goal to address our community’s most pressing problems. When you join a Dream Team, the corporate sponsor will donate $1 to that cause.  Once you join a Dream Team, recruit your friends, family, fans and followers to get in on the fun.

Jason Matheson is Captain of Team Shelter working towards raising money for the homelessness problem in the Twin Cities.  Did you know that on any given night in Minnesota, over 13,000 people are without shelter?  It’s a great cause to work towards ending, and one I care about personally as an architect who has worked on shelters for people and thought about how to solve this issue over the years.  I’m totally on Team Shelter.

About a week ago I started a new blog.  It is a vegan blog called, “The Veganette“.  This is in addition to the blog I already run that you are currently reading, my “Just Judy Bits & Pieces” blog, and a number of other blogs I either run am a contributor on.  Also, I have only been vegan for around three weeks.  You may be thinking, “Is she crazy?”  The answer to that question is yes.

I do however have a few reasons why I wanted to start the blog.  The blog is a Tumblr blog (that is the platform I am using for “The Veganette) and I have been wanting to try Tumblr for some time.  I also wanted to try a blog that is limited to one specific subject as my other blogs cover many different topics.  The last reason because I am so new to being vegan I thought it would be interesting to blog about.  I see the blog as a scrapbook of my journey into trying a new lifestyle, and believe me, it is a lifestyle.  I purposely chose a template that lent itself to a scrapbook format and am blogging on the page in a free-form-loose style.  I am sure that over time the things that I write about and the types of stories that catch my eye will change.

Look for everything from fashion, food, pop-culture, quotes, to personal “diary-style” entries written by me on this blog.  All on the subject of being vegan, of course.  You can also get my thoughts related to all things vegan by me on Twitter by following @TheVeganette.

For those of you who have been keeping up with me you know I have committed to losing twenty pounds by September 12th for charity: water for the Weight Loss For Water Campaign.  For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with me, due to recent back surgery and the lifestyle changes that go with it, I have put on weight.  When a friend Erica Mayer put out the word she was losing weight and raising money for charity: water I decided to join the campaign.  Erica also told me about a book she had read that she thought I would like when I confessed to her I would actually like to lose more than twenty pounds and make some drastic lifestyle changes along with this weight loss.  The book was Skinny Bitch.

When I went in for my back surgery and had an MRI done I was told I have the spine of an 80 year old.  Now that I am healed from the surgery and able to commit to an exercise program and healthy diet I have decided that the lighter I am and the better it will be on my spine.  Knowing that I have the spine of and 80 year old when I am only 37 years old makes me realized that I need to make some drastic life changes right now.  I am not getting any younger and my spine is not going to get any better, that is unless I can help it along.  For these reasons I think I was ready for the message that Skinny Bitch brings.

On the cover Skinny Bitch reads ‘A no-nonsense tough-love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous!’  Inside authors Rory Freeman and Kim Barnouin have created a vegan manifesto for mid-to-upper-class women. The book has a controversial (yet eye-catching and memorable) title, and targets a very specific demographic. Some have called Skinny Bitch a fat-fearing hate book that makes it seem like veganism is only for white women who want to embody Posh Spice. But what other book preaching veganism has been a #1 New York Times Best Seller and been spotted in the hands of celebrities like Jessica Alba? I believe that answer is: none.

Plus, Skinny Bitch has WORKED. It seems there are masses of people who completely woke up and did a 180 on their diets because of the book. And even though the book and its take-no-prisoners mantra has naysayers, their core advice is sound and recommend by doctors and nutritionists.

The reason I really like the book and it makes sense to me is the message about all the hormones and toxins in the food supply, particularly those given to animals and as a result are found in meat and dairy products.  I also like the message about reading all the labels of the food you buy, paying attention to where the food you eat comes from, and eating as naturally with as many organic foods as possible.

The authors have a suggestion to try a vegan diet for 30 days in order to re-train your pallet and see how your feel.  So this is what I am doing.  I started on Monday and so far so good.  Here is a list of the basic rules the book gives you and what I am doing.

• No meat of any kind. Includes: red meat, chicken, fish, and all seafood.  What I’m doing? Not eating any meat. Replacing with raw unsalted nuts (as the books suggests), beans, seeds (such as sunflower), and whole grains.

• No dairy of any kind. Includes: milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, and anything with these ingredients. What I’m doing? Not eating any dairy. Replacing with soy milk (which I like), rice products, and other soy products.

• No caffeine. What I’m doing? Decaf green tea. I suggest Good Earth Decaf Green Tea with Lemongrass.

• No alcohol except organic red wine. What I’m doing? No alcohol for now. I am sticking to Pellegrino bottled water.  I will let you know if that changes and I try some organic red wines to let you know which ones I like.

• Twenty minutes of cardio five times a week. Exercise in the morning to keep your heart and a higher rate all day. What I’m doing? Going for a twenty minute run outside five times a week in the morning.

• Do yoga. What I’m doing? I haven’t done any yoga yet. There is a yoga studio in my neighborhood I plan on checking out in a few weeks.

• Eat fruit for breakfast. What I’m doing? Eating fruit for breakfast. I always like to eat breakfast but I like a light breakfast.

• Eat a salad for lunch. What I’m doing? Eating a salad for lunch. This is really easy to do and I love salads for lunch in the summer. Don’t know how I will feel about it in January.

• Eat more complex foods like grains and beans later in the day for dinner and snacks. What I’m doing? I like the breads from French Meadow Bakery in Minneapolis (Women’s Bread, Men’s Bread, Hemp Bread). Buy them there or can be found in the freezer section of a lot of grocery stores. I also like sunflower nut butter, apple butter, agavae nectar (for sweetening) … I  can go on and on. But I do eat a dinner of a grain, such as rice, paired with something like beans, and a vegetable.

I personally like this way of eating a lot. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not much of a chef and I have to admit that I find cooking intimidating.  I have always enjoyed cooking with vegetables more than cooking with meat.  In the book Skinny Bitch the authors say that in the modern world we are able to disassociate ourselves with what we are eating from the animal that the meat came from.  In my case it is even more true as I never cook for myself.  Trying this new lifestyle while shopping for and preparing all the food myself it is impossible to not think about the source of the products I am collecting and assembling.

I am committed to trying the Skinny Bitch way of life for 30 days.  I am always open to new ideas, if this works I am open to trying this for as long as it fits.  Don’t worry, I will let you all know when I become a Skinny Bitch.

I explained in a post yesterday how I am joining a campaign to lose weight for charity: water. The idea behind the Weight Loss For Water campaign is to set a goal of losing weight over a three month period and donate money for every pound you lose to charity: water.  I am planning on losing twenty pounds, because that is the amount I need to lose, but also because $20 is enough money to buy safe drinking water for one person in a developing nation for 20 years.

If I was to donate $1 for every pound I lose I can buy 1 person drinking water for 20 years after losing 20 pounds.  If I donate $2 for every pound I lose I can buy drinking water for 2 people for 20 years, you can see where this is going, the math is simple.  I am also asking people to “sponsor” me while I lose weight for water so others can also have the opportunity to donate to charity: water.  The math is simple and the donation is small.

Before you decide to sponsor me you probably want to know how I plan to lose 20 pounds before the September deadline.  My main method of dieting is the E.L.F. (Eat Less Food). To describe this in more detail, I believe that if you eat less calories than the amount you burn each day you will lose weight.  I usually don’t pay attention to calorie counting and just try and eat healthy, but since I am taking this public I have decided to track my calories so I have a record.  I am using an app on my iPad called GoMealsHD and so far I really like it.  It is really simple and has almost everything already programmed in that I eat.  If not is is very easy to add new items to the list of foods already programmed in.  I have given myself the daily amount of 1,200 – 1,800 calories so I can have a little wiggle room.

Other things I am doing to help me lose weight? I am making a commitment to exercise 30 minutes a day.  This will come in the form for a run or walk or combination of both depending on how I feel that day.  I am also restricting certain items such as alcohol, sugar and wheat.  At first I thought about eliminating all of those items completely from my diet but then I realized that the calorie restriction pretty much keeps me from having too much alcohol, sugar or wheat items anyway. I was introduced to charity: water by a friend of mine, Erica Mayer. Erica is a self described “Preditor” (producer/writer/shoot/director/editor) for the WCCO-TV Creative Team. She is also a hobby photographer, co-founder of Java Meetup Minneapolis and generally an all around great person. This spring she did an online campaign to raise money for the organization for her birthday. The idea being that people give contributions to charity: water instead of buy her gifts. Erica raised $11,111 during the three month campaign.

This summer deciding that she needed to get in shape, and being mildly obsessed with this organization, Erica decided to take her weight loss public and start another campaign for charity: water. Originally she was going to do to the campaign privately and solicit donations from close friends and family. Her friend Cindy Elizabeth decided to join her in losing “weight for water” and had the idea that other people might want to join in too. With that simple suggestion Erica decided to take the idea public and the Weight Loss For Water campaign was born.

I have decided to join Erica in her campaign and lose weight for water. Why am I doing this? First of all I believe in chairty: water as an organization and support their mission of bringing safe drinking water to people in developing nations. From the charity: water website -

‘Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk 5 miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are a billion people on the planet who don’t have clean water.
It’s hard to imagine what a billion people looks like really, but one in eight might be easier. One in eight people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without. ‘

The other obvious reason to join a weight loss campaign is to lose weight. I had back surgery this spring and between not moving around and getting into some bad lifestyle habits I need to lose about 20lbs. right now. Erica’s Weight Loss For Water campaign seems like the perfect opportunity for me to support a good cause while getting myself back in shape.

The basic idea behind Weight Loss For Water is to get a group together to lose weight, and donate to charity: water for each pound lost. The suggested minimum goal is to donate $20 total since that buys water for one person for 20 years. This could be mixed up a number of different ways: $1/per pound, and shoot for 20 lbs over the course of 3 months, or $2/pound = 10 lbs, etc.

People can also be involved who don’t want to lose weight by sponsoring a person who is losing weight, for example Erica or me. If you want you could decide to donate a certain dollar amount for every pound we lose to charity: water or you could donate money at the end once we take it off. The campaign started on June 21st and will last for a three month period, ending in September. You can follow the campaign through the mycharity: water web site Erica has set up and through the Weight Loss for Water Facebook group.

In a simple Tweet sent out on the evening of June 9, 2010, myTalk107.1 host Jason Matheson declared that he wanted Bethenny Frankel from “Real Housewives New York City” and “Bethenny Getting Married” to call into his radio show (Jason & Alexis, 1-3pm M-F on myTalk 107.1 FM).  The thing is, when Jason puts something like this out into the “Twit-i-shpere” things start to happen.  To get everything out in the open, yes, Jason is a friend of mine.  I have also from time to time been a contributor on his radio show.  I am currently a contributor on The Weekend Buzz with Jason Matheson, that airs on Fox 9 (Jason is also a TV host on Fox 9).

The first time Jason had the goal of getting someone to call into his radio show it was 2009 and the person he wanted to call in was none other than Katie Couric.  The declaration spawned a very popular Facebook group named, “Katie Couric please call Jason Matheson and give him a CBS hat & mug“.  Soon we were Tweeting Katie regularly, telling her to call into the show plus doing other kinds of stunts to make it happen.  Before long word got back to Jason and his radio show that Katie’s people had seen the Facebook group and thought it was hilarious.  Katie did call into the show and has done it a few times since.  Katie has even “DM’ed” me at times to check what time to call the show.

As you have seen from Jason’s Tweet at the start of this post, the goal for this year is for the lovely and talented Bethenny Frankel to call in. Why?  Because we love her.  Most importantly Jason loves her!  A Facebook group already been started. Please join it and support our movement.

There are other ways you can help our cause.  Follow Bethenny on Twitter and let her know how you feel about Jason Matheson and her calling into her show.  We can’t launch a successful social media campaign without your help.  It’s also fun because Bethenny is an active Twitter user with great Tweets such as this:

A few months ago I started noticing that a few of my Facebook friends were sporting really rad profile pics of themselves with “laser eyes”. Everyone from l’etoile magazine’s Kate Iverson & Jahna Peloquin to fashion designer Emma Berg and DJ Jake Rudh.  I realized from reading the comments on a few of the portraits that it was David Annis, Lead Producer at Zeus Jones, who was the man behind the awesome portraits.  I sent a Facebook friend request his way, just because I realized we had ton of friends in common at that he would be a good connection.  The next thing I knew not only had he accepted my friend request, but a Laser Eye portrait of me had been posted on Facebook! I was so flattered at getting an unsolicited portrait done I decided to write about Laser Eyes and ask David a few questions about their history.

JG (Judy Grundstrom): Why do you make Laser Eye portraits?

DA (David Annis): Mostly because people seem to like them and I can make them really quickly. Its a simple way to make people feel good, even if its for like 5 seconds before they are on to the next distraction for the day. I also think Laser Eyes make people look like some kinda badass super hero or cosmic angel or something like that. When I look at all of them together I imagine this alternate reality where everyone has Laser Eyes and they run around doing even more amazing things. Someone should make a feature length movie about it.

JG: How did you get started making Laser Eye portraits of people and how do you choose your subjects?

DA: I started by adding some Laser Eyes to a picture of my lovely wife Jodi and a couple of her friends. It took about a minute and I thought it made them look like space aliens hovering over the city blasting amazing at people. Then I thought it would be funny offer Laser Eyes to anyone for $5 a pop over on www.fiverr.com. I actually got some takers, but as the meme spread through the Facebook (with help from my friend and co-worker Christian Erickson ) it became more fun just to surprise people with them, especially those folks that commented on other people’s pics. So, if someone said “sweet Laser Eyes! I wish I had them” then as soon as I could I’d hook them up with a set. People started telling friends that if they wanted Laser Eyes they just needed to ask. And for the last couple weeks I’ve been giving anyone that wants Laser Eyes some extra amazingness for the day.

JG: What are your thoughts about Laser Eyes and the popularity of the portraits?

DA: I think its pretty fun that people get such a kick out of something so simple and, lets be honest, pretty re-cake-u-lous. I’m also stoked this mini Facebook meme has lasted as long as it has, and I’m serious, I think a totally a goof ball Laser Eyes show with lasers and smoke and finger sandwiches and rad music would be a BLAST! Get it? a blast? ZzzzzZZzaaapp!!

I have been on Facebook for a really long time. I believe I joined in 2005 when I received an invitation from one of my British cousins. I say “believe” because it was such a long time ago I don’t really remember and Facebook doesn’t tell you when you became a member. I do know that when I joined Facebook it was so simple that all you could do at the time was poke people, write on friend’s walls, and post pictures. My parents are from England and all of my cousins live there. I have many cousins who are 10 years younger than me and at that time were all in their early-to-mid twenties. We were mainly using the site to post pictures of each other and keep in touch. I have to say the site worked really well for that and still does. I don’t think I would know as much about my cousins and kept in close as touch with them over the years if not for Facebook.

As the site has evolved I have evolved with it. I am naturally an early adopter and was one of the first people to use Facebook messages, groups, pages, chat, and so on. I like the site as a whole and like the network of people it has brought me. Some of the changes to the site I can do without but some of the changes have been brilliant and brought users to the site who I thought would never “get on Facebook”.

About a month ago I started hearing from the so called “tech people” that Facebook is changing it’s privacy policy and isn’t private enough. This is leading many people to re-think the information that they are putting out on the social network and possibly even quit Facebook all together. To this I have to say, are you people idiots?

First of all, what kind of “tech people” are you “tech people” anyway? You are just figuring out now that Facebook have privacy issues? Really? Because as far as I am concerned that site was always a big mess of non-private, virus laden, get ready to meet someone who has a fake profile, piece of work. Now we are supposed to worry about this? I thought we were a group of people who Twittered all day long every single thing we were doing, Foursquared the exact location we were doing it at, and synced all that information to our Facebook status so we could have less privacy. I mean, if someone could create a social network that would put up what we were doing on an electronic billboard in Downtown Minneapolis I am pretty sure we would all sign up for that pretty damn quick.

I come from a family of tech people. When I say tech people I mean really techie people. I have one brother who designs digital signal processing chips. He mainly works on quick drive technology these days. For you tech people who aren’t techie enough to understand this it means he makes your computer go faster. I have another brother who is a high level computer programmer. He works on call-in TV shows internationally, on a large scale, (think American Idol) making their call in lines work. Guess what my techie brothers don’t do? They don’t go on Facebook. Or on Twitter. Or on anything else. They are actually friends with one of the original Twitter guys (The former COO of Twiter). When he comes to Minneapolis he hangs out with my brothers and talks technology. He doesn’t go on Facebook either. Do you want to know why? They don’t think it is safe.  They have never thought it was safe and they never will.

Do you want to know what my brother does do? He makes his own computers. He orders all the components, puts the computer together, and runs a server out of his basement. He runs everything on Linux and share-ware. He calls his setup “The Deathstar”. He hosts his own website out of the Kingdom of Tonga (I am totally serious about this) called carter.to, and he hosts his own music site called carter.to/discs. He does all of this stuff because he doesn’t think any of the other stuff most people are using everyday is safe and wants to be totally private. He also thinks I am crazy for  participating in all the social media sites that I participate in. He is constantly sending me links and articles about the latest Twitter virus or Facebook virus and just generally making fun of me about it.

I think he is crazy. So no, I am not quitting Facebook, you Facebook quitting idiots. This is how I see it, you are either going to ride a motorcycle without a helmet or you are going to buy a Volvo. Just the same, you are either going to Facebook/Twitter/Foursquare/Linkedin or you are going to build “The Deathstar” in your basement and host a website out of the Kingdom of Tonga. If you look you can see, that’s me, riding down the highway, on a motorcycle without a helmet.

Picture of Conan O'Brien & Me

I had the pleasure of being at an event that Conan O’Brien was hosting last night and getting my picture taken with him (in case you are wondering, his is very nice, he acts exactly like you would expect him to from watching him on TV).  I posted the photo on Facebook and Twitter, like I am known to do with various picture of myself from various different events.  Today one of my friends made a funny “mock” photo of himself with Conan using my photo as the base and putting his head over my head.

When the picture of Conan O’Brien and me hit the internet I was of course immediately hit with the customary type of compliments you would expect, such as, “Jealous!” and, “Cool!”  The picture was even featured on today’s LOL/OMG blog, all great things.

The thing is, when Karl posts his picture of Conan, me & his head on the internet, people start to compliment him on his rack.  I start to wonder, why didn’t I get any compliments on my rack?  I mean, it’s the same rack?  And really Karl isn’t getting complimented on his rack, he is actually getting complimented on my rack.  So on behalf of all you peeps who complimented Karl today on “his” rack, thank you.

In the end during a heated Facebook discussion we were able to figure it out.  As it turns out, cleavage stands out more on a man than on a woman.  Also, telling a man he has a nice rack isn’t sexual harassment but telling a woman she has one is, even if the rack being complimented on the man is a woman’s. Most importantly, it turns out that I am prettier than Karl.  When people look at a picture of me they have more to look at than just my rack, such as my face.  When people look at a picture of Karl and my rack is involved it turns out that my rack steels the show.  Sorry about that Karl, sometimes the world is just a cold, hard place.
