Media Jumps All Over Calling Blondes “Warrior Princesses”. It’s Not True, It’s Sexy
This week the Sunday Times printed a story called “Blonde women born to be warrior princesses.” The main idea of the story is that women with blonde hair are more aggressive than brunettes or redheads and more likely to display a “warlike” streak. This was said to have happened to blondes because they exist in a “bubble” where they have been treated better than others, particularly men, for so long they don’t know they are getting deferential treatment. In fact, they may not even realize they are being treated like a princess.
This story was so interesting and sexy that the BBC picked it up printing basically the same information as the Sunday Times. After that the headline was repeated over and over, “Blondes are warrior princesses.” The thing is, the Times had the story wrong, and the people who had done the research study the story was based on came forward to tell everyone.
The study was done at the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California. Aaron Sell, the researcher credited in the Times has come forward saying he has never done any research showing blondes to be more warlike than brunettes or redheads. The trouble came when the Times asked him to break down his research according to hair color.
This is what he found out after his breakdown:
“Blonde women do _not_ feel more entitled.
Blonde women are _not_ more prone to anger
Blonde women do _not_ feel more attractive than other women.
Blonde women are _not_ more militaristic.”
How the Times came up with the warrior princess headline after reading that is a mystery. One thing that is for sure is that the headline they came up with is sexier than what the research showed.
What Aaron Sell did find out on his research on anger is this: women who view themselves as pretty, and stronger men, tend to be more entitled. So it turns out that hot blonde women are not more entitled than other hot women.
