“Coasties” Vs. “Sconnies” At University of Wisconsin-Madison

What’s a Coastie?  A potentially anti-Semitic song about girls from the East Coast by a rap group from the University of Wisconsin called Zooniversity explains it. I understand what a “coastie” is now, but many people still don’t quite understand why they have business being in Madison, Wisconsin.  The “coastie” song became very popular on MySpace and YouTube this fall and has introduced that rest of the America to a little known culture war going on at U of W-Madison, the fight between East Coast “coasties” and local Wisonsin “sconnies”.

This song is doing more than shedding light on the local U of W-Madison slang, it’s starting to cause some controversey.  It seems the term coastie was most likely coined in Madison in the past 15 years but now it has gained popularity, even getting it’s own entry in the Urban Dictionary:

‘1. coastie: Girls from the coastal areas of the United States, who for some reason decided to flood the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Very easy to spot, owing to their overuse of: Uggz boots (even when it isn’t cold or snowy), large sunglasses (even when there is no sun), messy ponytails (for that “I just completed the walk of shame and didn’t shower today” look), and anything North Face, typically the Denali jackets or knee-length down coats. They also like to wear stretchy black or maroon pants bunched up around the tops of their Uggz. During the winter, Coasties can be identified by their bright orange skin- they are notorious over-users of tanning booths.

God, she’s such a coastie! Look at her boots- it’s May! What is she doing in Wisconsin???!!!’

The claims of anti-Semitism stem from the song’s references to a “Jewish American Princess” and “My east coast Jewish honey” who wastes her father’s money. The songs writers, Harrison and Grefe, known on campus as Quincy and Beef, say the song was not meant to insult Jews. Harrison said in the song he is flirting with a good-looking coastie that he wants to get to know better.

The Los Angles Times recently ran a story on this topic and attributed some of the tension between coasties and sconnies to the housing situation on campus.

‘ Many blame a state law for fueling the divide by giving preference to Wisconsin residents for a limited number of university dorm rooms. That forces other students to stay in private residence halls where they don’t interact with their Wisconsin counterparts.

Other out-of-state students say they choose to live with their own in private residence halls that tend to have more amenities and cost more than the public dorms.

Chancellor Biddy Martin said she wants to study the housing issue further and tamp down any hard feelings caused by the song. ‘

I think the quality of fights he would get in the UFC would be comparable or superior to those he’ll get in Pride, where he won’t likely get a title shot.
