James Franco: General Hospital Soap Star/Performance Artist

I want to start this post out by saying I am a huge General Hospital fan.  Get that? I. Am. A. HUGE. General Hospital.  Fan.

I when I was growing up I had a baby-sitter who used to watch General Hospital (GH) all the time.  This was back the 1980′s when “Luke & Laura” were a great big deal and just about everybody was watching.  The thing about GH is, and I don’t know if this is true of other soaps because I don’t watch them, you don’t actually have to watch it to follow it.  Once you know all the characters and the complex family structures you can go for over five years without watching an episode and then randomly turn on the TV one day to tune-in and completely know what is going on.  That is just one of the things that makes GH totally awesome.

Another one of the other things that makes GH totally awesome is the soap’s power to bring in really hot guest stars to the show.  The latest being James Franco.  He is doing a short stint on the soap as a character named “Franco”, no first name or last name, just one name.  “Franco” was described in promo’s for the show as, “An artist whoes canvas is murder.”  I knew as soon as I saw the promo that this was going to be epic.

James Franco is done filming his guest performance on GH but, I was right, it is epic.  Here are some scences from the Novemember 20th episode where were “Franco” witnesses a shoot-out and we find out that he is not so innocent after all.  If you are wondering who “Franco” is in this scene, he’s the guy with the hoodie on tagging a street light and pretending to be homeless when the mobsters walk by.

Now that his time filming GH is over James Franco is talking about it.  He wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal last week titled, “A Star, A Soap, And The Meaning Of Art: Why an appearance on ‘General Hospital’ qualifies as performance art.“  Just when I thought this whole thing couldn’t get any better, BAM, it does.  James Franco in the WSJ calling GH performance art.  It’s like someone is making my private dreams come true.  Here is some of what he wrote:

‘ The folks at “General Hospital” informed me that in three days of filming we backlogged enough material for 23 episodes. There will be one more step. After all of the Franco episodes are aired, my character’s storyline will be advanced in a special episode filmed in a “legitimate” New York gallery. One more layer will be added to this already layer-heavy experiment. If all goes according to plan, it will definitely be weird. But is it art? ‘

Good question James.  I always like to turn to Andy Warhol in times like these to answer questions like this as he was famous for brilliant quotes.  Warhol said, “An artist is somebody who produces things that people don’t need to have.”  Does anybody need General Hospital? No.  Does anybody need James Franco on General Hospital?  Hell no.

For this reason, in my eyes it’s not only art, it’s the best kind of art.  Bravo young Franco, bravo.

    FULL OF AWESOME.

By the way, I love this quote: “Once you know all the characters and the complex family structures you can go for over five years without watching an episode and then randomly turn on the TV one day to tune-in and completely know what is going on.”

Yes, that is totally true of all soaps and I marvel at it. During my 8th grade summer I had an insane soap opera schedule that started at 11am with Young and the Restless, followed by All my Children, One Life to Live and ended with General Hospital at 2pm. And that was pretty much my day.

To this day, I can tune into any one of those soaps and within 5 minutes I know exactly what is going on. I think my favorite thing is the over-shoulder camera shot where two people are hugging and the one facing the camera has a big, big secret. *cut to commercial*
