And So It Goes: Good Bye & Farewell

SO IT GOES is playing their final gig tomorrow night at the Fine Line. As my good friend Kris Vruno said over Twitter yesterday, “I’ll be the one in black mourning on Friday … at the SO IT GOES Farewell Show.” I’m pretty sure there is going to be a whole gang of us in black at show on Friday. Don’t get me wrong, we will still be dancing our asses off and screaming at the end of every song, but the somber black tones of our fashion will signify that mourning is in order.

I had the chance to catch up with Adam Gislason (lead vocal, guitar, AKA Atom Bomb) from SO IT GOES earlier today. He answered some questions for me about the band and the Farewell Show.
Judy Grundstrom (JG): What do you have to say about the Farewell Show being the very last show for SO IT GOES?
Adam Gislason (AG): There are a few bummers in life, for example, losing loved ones, disrespect, baseless hate, stubbing your big toe…especially on a coffee table, but as bittersweet as our Farewell Show may be, it is going to be a blast celebrating the good times that we have shared and the music we have created together.
JG: What are some of the influences of SO IT GOES?
AG: Our influences reach far and wide, from Bob Marley to Bob Dylan, to Blur and My Bloody Valentine, to The Cure and The Clash, The Smiths, Ride, Daft Punk and everything 80s new wave and post-modern to current dance rock like Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem and Bloc Party!!! Perhaps the better way to think about it is what DOES NOT influence us. The answer is, not much. When I’m writing, I generally don’t think about this or that. It just comes first melodically or when I’m rockin on my bass to a killer beat. For me, everything starts there. It’s primarily primal and in the hips, then it moves up to the heart and then to the head. Ha! Something like that! Hahaha!
JG: Can you tell us what to expect Friday night during the Farewell show?
AG: Friday night’s show is going to be intense and will cover SO IT GOES from beginning to end. We’re going to play some songs from our first demo that I engineered in my basement. Only a few people have heard that CD, and it’s been forever since we’ve played the songs, like “Don’t Tread on Me” and “Wake & Know,” which Trav wrote and is really cool. It’s been really fun rehearsing these older songs with Brian and Lee who weren’t with the band at the time, and we’ve modernized the tracks a little by incorporating a few new parts on keys for Lee…and I must say, I wish we had her 3 years ago! Anyway…You’ll get to hear these tracks and many more Friday night.
JG: Do you like playing in Minneapolis?
AG: We’re so lucky and honored to be from Minneapolis. Go to any other city on this planet, especially during the week, and you’ll know why we have it so good here in Erotic City (as Prince likes to call it). Amazing bands, fantastic music, stellar venues, and great people.
JG: If people come to the show will you sweat for us?
AG: For better or worse, we do what we do and we are what we are. Come watch us sweat! It’s your last chance. Who knows what will happen on the stage, but I’m certain that it’s going to be one hell of show and a night to remember. [Sniffle sniffle, POW!] We hit the stage around midnight, but the fun all begins at 9 pm.

It’s a long story–starting with a kid singing in the shower, then the decision to allow him to let his hair grow, to having a garage band in the basement instead of the garage to keep the neighbors at bay and to take Broken Toyz here and there as a dad and chaperone. Many years later, it’s two brothers, singing their hearts out. Nice interview, Judy. Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow night. I may be in black, but few others will have white hair to go with the color scheme.
Dear Adam,
Have a great time on Friday. We wish you and all of the band members the best of everything. Endings are always so hard! Hold fast to the memories you have made and all of the people who have enjoyed your music!
Some new ideas I found recently…..
It was very helpful for me to spend some time on wikipedia. This really helps to understand a lot of stuff much better!…
Thank you to get sharing this information. But it would be truly great to get some additional details!
Very awesome article. It really helped me alot! Thanks!
I was just doing some surfing on my iPhone during my free time at my work place, and I happened across something I thought was interesting . It linked to your site so I hopped over. I can’t really find the relevance between your site and the one I came from, but your site good none the less .
The sound is what makes this album amazing.
