What Women Don’t Want For Christmas: A Pap Smear

December 2, 2009
By Judy Grundstrom

“Give her the gift that even Santa can’t deliver.”

I wish I were joking about this.  While I believe that pap smears are not only a great idea and essential to women’s health and saving lives, I do not believe that a pap smear is a great Christmas present idea for the woman in your life.  In fact, giving a pap smear out as a Christmas gift will probably result in a serious case of “present face” on Christmas morning.

Yet, this holiday season CBS has launched the “CBS Cares Pap Smear Project” telling men to get women pap smears for Christmas. The idea for this project came about while someone who is only willing to identify themselves as “CBS Cares” was out to dinner in Manhattan.  CBS Cares was apparently out to dinner by themselves because it was super easy to “overhear” the women at the next table talking about pap smears while waiting for an appetizer.  For some reason, this CBS Cares person has no problem with public eavesdropping, talking about pap smears and food in the same sentence, or giving out inappropriate Christmas gifts.  What I can’t figure out is why a major TV network like CBS would go along with this.  From the CBS Cares website:

cartoon

‘ I was waiting for my appetizer when I overheard two women diners talking about pap smears. The one in her 40′s said she hated pap smears. The one in her 30′s enthusiastically agreed …

From what I could gather, the problem was that the gynecologist’s instrument is refrigerated. I thought I heard the words, “Really cold spatula!” But I later learned that the gynecologist’s instrument is actually called a “speculum”  …

In any case, I shuddered at the thought of a cold instrument being used for such a medical screening and hardly noticed as the waiter shaved large chunks of parmesan cheese onto my side plate.

As the appetizer arrived (lightly fried calamari drizzled with a really great spicy marinara sauce), I was asking myself the question, “Should CBS Cares do a project on pap smears? Why had we not seen public service campaigns on the subject?”

By the time the main course arrived (breaded shrimp sautéed in a delicate wine sauce, accompanied by a surprisingly verdant escarole), my mind was made up – I would call Isaac Schiff on Monday to pursue the matter! ‘

I know, gross.  Who mixes talk of Italian food, speculums, and pap smears?  CBS, that’s who.

Seriously CBS?  I mean, are you serious?  Seriously?

OH MY GOD. This is the most awful thing I’ve ever seen. At the very least, they could have had a WOMAN do the spot. And NOT as a Christmas gift. AWFUL!!!

I think this message and cartoon are outrageous…AND BRILLIANT!!!! CBS Cares, you have raised the bar on public service! Having said that, I’m not letting Santa come down my chimney this Christmas!!!

By CBS Cares’ rationale, shouldn’t the campaign be aimed at docs- a “Warm up the spatula, I mean that speculum thing before you come near my lady’s coocha” campaign? Wouldn’t that be a better message?
