Are Hipsters The New Victorians?

In today’s Style section of the New York Times there is an article titled “This Just In From The 1890′s” that discusses how late 19th Century decor and dress is back in fashion.  The Times is largely crediting hipsters for this retro trend.  Yes, designers such as Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren have military style coats with big brass buttons showing on the runway.  Also, there will be a Sherlock Holmes movie directed by Guy Ritchie staring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law set in 1880′s London coming out soon.

Yet this trend really did start with the hipsters.  Curio cases, taxidermy, and other Victorian era clutter have been the trappings of young hipsters for some time now.  Along with a love of high-lapel vests, slim fitting trousers tucked into high boots, and the ever present beards & mustaches. You don’t have to look father than our local Clubhouse Jager to see evidence of this.

Taavo Somer who owns a restaurant named Freemans on the Lower East Side of New York told the Times, “We’ve already seen the comeback of the butcher and the baker, next thing is going to be a hipster candlestick maker.”

Hipsters have gone so crazy for being Victorian that even deer hunting with old-fashioned muzzle-loaded rifles, which have to be loaded with gunpowder, a musket ball and a ramrod have come back in force in some states.  The Times  predicts that beaver hunting may have a comeback, with people making beaver-fur hats.  My father-in-law will be ahead of the trend on this. Living in Northern Minnesota, he has trapped his own beavers for years and regularly gives beaver-fur hats out as Christmas gifts (note: my husband has one of these, please give him hipster extra credit.)

Another Northern Minnesota Victorian era hipster icon I think we should be getting credit for is Paul Bunyan.  Every time I drive by a giant Paul Bunyan at the side of the road I think every hipster is ripping off his style.  Everything from the lace up boots to the little hat and even the plaid is seen on hipsters.  I mean really, who wants Paul Bunyan to be their style icon?  Hipsters, that’s who.

My father is from England and is old fashioned in many ways, from his politics to the analog recording equipment he keeps, and the antique tractors he uses to tend to his lake place.  For years I have called him “the last of the Victorians”.  It is actually sad that a bunch of hipsters are threatening to take his throne because they like to wear three piece suits and go bow hunting.
