Fort Hood Heroine Proves Women Should Be Allowed In Combat

At the press conference that followed Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s shooting spree at Fort Hood Lt. Gen. Robert Cone gave the media this information; there were 12 dead, 31 wounded, one shooter, two guns, Hasan was shot down at the scene but was not dead (as was previously reported), and the person that shot him was also wounded but not dead either. And she was a woman.
The media instantly wanted to know more about this “hero”. We know that she is a civilian police officer and was one of the “first responders” to the scene. She shot Hasan four times but was also wounded herself in gun battle, her condition is now stable. The point is, she is the one who stopped Hasan by shooting him, she nearly died, and if she had tried to enlist to fight in the front lines of the Army she would have been turned down.

The Pentagon’s policy on women in combat reads like this: Women shall be excluded from assignment to most units “whose primary mission” is “direct combat on the ground”. This existing policy dates back to 1994, when then Defense Secretary Les Aspin loosened what had been even tighter restrictions. By 2006 more than 92% of Army occupations were open to women. That is progress, but today the combat exclusions just don’t make sense.
In a USA TODAY/Gallup poll from September 2005, 74% of Americans agreed that women should be allowed to hold combat jobs. That is up from 36% in an NBC News poll that asked the same question in 1981. That would lead one to believe that most of the opponents of women in combat have gotten over their objections.
Women should be assigned to any specialty for which they can pass a test and qualify. Gawker also posted on this topic today, noting that the Army has a tendency to get spooked by sexual tension. Also, it will be a drag to deal with female toliets in the barracks. But deal with it, Army. The brave actions of the female civilian police officer at Fort Hood proves that woman can fight with bravery in combat situations. Now the military just needs to give women the chance.
