Japanese Women Swoon Over Samurai While Girly Men Take Over

Currently there is a Samurai Boom among Japanese women.  A recent article in The Economist titled, “They Need Another Hero“, talks about young women making pilgrimages to a village in central Japan to pay homage to Ieyasu Tokugawa, Japan’s mightiest shogun.

When did it become trendy for Japanese women to turn into history buffs?  It is because of the popularity of a video game called “Sengoku Basara” (Devil Kings).  The creator of the game explains that his game is different than the typical violence, blood, and guts that are normally the staples of action video games.  Instead the Samurai in Devil Kings are brave, noble, and totally hot.  The game was not marketed to women and the company and creator are surprised at the phenomenon the game has started.

There seems to be more behind this trend than just women wanting to play a video game that involves hunky looking Samurai.  Currently in Japan it is difficult for women to find dates, let alone someone to marry.  This is blamed on the fact that there are poor job prospects for men. The decline in marriage is so sharp that it has caused birth rates to drop.  Some of the men who don’t marry have started their own trend in Japan, called the soshokukei danshi or “herbivorous males”, and Ojo-man – or “girly men”.

What is a Japanese “girly man”? They can be described as metrosexuals without testosterone.  The Times Online recently wrote about “girly men” and had this to say in the article:

‘Girly men have no interest in fast cars, career success, designer labels and trophy women. Instead, they hold down humble jobs, cultivate women as friends rather than conquests and spend their free time shopping at small boutiques and pursuing in Japan what is regarded as a profoundly feminine pastime: eating cakes. ‘

These men are not homosexuals, yet they aren’t really heterosexuals either.  They prize fashion and lifestyle over having sex.  Clothing lines have been launched that include skirts, lacy tops, and bras, some of them pink, and all of them aimed at men.

When the “girly man” trend is juxtaposed with the Samurai swooning trend the women’s love of Samurai makes more sense. Video game Samurai are starting to look pretty good right now to me too.
