2010 Fashion Preview: 1990′s Fashion Is Back
If Fall 2009 Fashion is all about the 1980′s then Spring and Summer Fashion is going be about looking back to the 1990′s. Why am I writing about this now? The Fashion Weeks have wrapped up around the globe and it’s a good time to sit back and look at what the underlying trends were. Now it will just take a few more months for what happened on the runway to show up at our local malls. If you are like me and don’t want to wait that long, take these ideas, hit the vintage stores now and be one of the trendsetters in your group.
What are the big trends to look for from the runway that can make will be making it into your closet? Here is my list.
- Kitten Heels: Those of you who wobble on platforms and fall down on stilettos will be happy to hear that a heel of a friendlier height is back in fashion again. Both Mission and Vuitton were showing updated versions of the kitten heel on the runway.
- Sportswear: After being told time and again by Tim Gunn and other TV gurus to throw out your hoodies the sportswear as trendy-wear look is back in again. This time think more Bond Girl than hanging out at the gym girl. Balenciaga was showing soft leather hoodies on the runway.
- Safety pins: In the early 1990′s a number of designer dresses came out that looked as if they would fall apart if not for the safety pins holding them together. Flash forward 15-20 years and the look is back. This time colorful, oversize safety pins have been seen on everything from dresses to bags to shoes. A great trend for the do-it-yourself girl who wants to go vintage, get tearing, and get crafty.
- Neon: The past few seasons have been about colorful brights being mixed together. Now get ready for the brightest of the brights, neon. The Marc by Marc Jacobs collection had all the color combinations you could want put together at times it seemed at random. If you are not ready to go all the way with this trend, buy a neon belt and pair it with a gray dress. If you are really ready for the trend; take that belt, put it with the dress then put another neon hued cardigan over the top.
- Layers: The 90′s were all about layers and so is Spring and Summer 2010. I am ready to say this. It is OK to wear a long sleeve t-shirt under a sundress again. And wear another shirt over the dress. Like we did in the 90′s. Really. It is. It is also OK to wear tights and boots with that same dress shirt combination. You heard it here first.
- Rave Whistle: The necklaces worn at the Missoni show had rave whistles attached. No word yet on if pacifiers are coming back too.

I bet Vegas wouldn’t touch those odds. Anyways I know just from my kids that just about everyone in school shows up every morning with a hoodie on, some in the summer ( those kids scare me – if you know what I mean )

Hi, I’ve found your website after googling Fashion and 90s, cuz I’ve noticed that the popular (cheap) clothes store in our town – Dublin does a lot of things I hoped I won’t see anywhere else than in thrift stores and films from early 90.
Flowery patterned shoes, square shaped sweaters, loads of shades of grey and pastel colours. After seeing that I’ve decided it’s not gonna get to me and I’m sticking to minimalism and classy pieces that fortunately are fashionable this season, too
