Kanye West & D-Baggery: A History
For those of you who don’t know what d-baggery is I would like to start with a definition from the indispensable Urban Dictionary.
D-Baggery: The act of one being a Douche Bag. It is looked upon as a crime that all people who commit it should be driven over with studded tires, pulled behind a truck down a gravel road, shoved down a hole containing a very pissed off badger, and the sound of their pain recorded and spread on the internet so the crime will be reduced…Lets face it, we can’t eliminate it, there are still people out there with the life that just defines D-Bag.

When Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech at this years VMA’s it was the d-bag moment heard around the world. I have been following Kanye and his d-baggery for some time now. I thought it might be a good time to look back on the year in the life of the d-bag that is Kanye West.
Let’s start with something that happened last fall. Kanye was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after a fight with paparazzi and charged with felony vandalism. It was reported that he yelled, “Give me the f*****g tape!”
Police took him into custody. The irony is that he was recording his song Love Lockdown at the time, which is probably what the police had him in.
Next up for Kanye West, the Grammy’s. This is the night when the disrespectful Grammy producers learned that Kanye West couldn’t be played off the stage. Fifteen minutes into his emotional speech for Best Rap Album victory producers tried to get him off the stage with some “wrap it up music”. Kanye continued to talk for forty-five minutes.
Where does a winner like Kanye go from here? Of course it’s time for him to become a loser fashion blogger. Kanye West doesn’t just rap, write books, and honor his dead mother; he is also a fashion blogger. The thing is, the world of fashion isn’t welcoming him with open arms. Oh, cruel fashion world, when will you give Kanye the respect he deserves?
It looked like Kanye West was having a moment of clarity and going to turn everything around in April when he official decided to forsake the d-bag life. This happened after South Park had some fun at his expense and made an episode about what a huge douche he is. Instead of getting mad Kanye decided to quit being a HUGE DOUCHE. Here is what he wrote on his website (note, Kanye always writes in all caps):
‘ SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT’S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!” IT’S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU’RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE’S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I’M SURE THERE’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS… THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW IT’S ME! ’
This is probably the best thing Kanye has ever written. Too bad he wasn’t able to stop his bitch acting and yes, we do all think you are a huge douche.
In May a book written by Kanye West was published. While doing publicity for the book Kanye went around proudly declaring that he didn’t read books himself. Classic.
This is from the UK Guardian article about the book:
‘ “I am a proud non-reader of books,” announces Kanye West, in the course of promoting one he has written. “I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book’s autograph. I like to get information from doing stuff like actually talking to people and living real life.”
The work is a series of Kanye’s philosophies entitled Thank You and You’re Welcome, and if I told you that it was a worthy heir to the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, I would be underselling it. It runs to a full 52 pages – and according to Reuters, several of them have writing on them. “I hate the word hate!” reads one … page? Chapter? “Life is 5% what happens and 95% how you react!” reads another. ‘
In September the VMA’s were held. Kanye had the d-bag moment heard around the world. President Obama called him a jackass. I don’t know where he will go from here but I am sure Kanye will think of something.

Uh personally, kanye west is probably the biggest douche bag to ever walk the face of the earth. His first 3 albums were alright, 808s and heartbreak and everything he’s done since it has sucked horribly.
